Colquhoun Residence and Carriage House, Rumson, New Jersey

“The Hermitage,” designed by Stanford White, of the firm McKim, Mead and White, is one of New Jersey’s finest estate homes. Rudolph Architects was commissioned to restore and renovate this beautiful landmark and return it to its original glory. The structural integrity of the building was assessed and determined to be in need of significant repair and/or replacement. The western wing of the residence received the bulk of the repair, including all of the columns at the exterior porches. In addition, the entrance hall and master bedroom were completely restored and a new master bathroom was added. The Carriage House, designed in the Shingle Style to respect the architecture of the main residence, has the strength of design to stand alone. This new structure complements the forms and materials of the main residence, by its careful siting and attention to detail. The Carriage House has parking for eight cars and guest quarters, a library and a wine tasting room on the upper level.
